Dr. Gloria Baigorrotegui: Addressing social conflicts with technology from a research and science perspective

Marzo 31, 2023 con ciencia mujer

Dr. Gloria Baigorrotegui, Professor at the Faculty of Human Sciences, IDEA-USACH Institute

How do large energy generation plants affect societies? This is the main focus of the research conducted by the professor and researcher, Dr. Gloria Baigorrotegui, PhD in Social and Political Studies of Science and Technology from Universidad del País Vasco, and a degree in Civil Industrial Engineering from Universidad de Santiago de Chile.

“The field of energy and society is an interdisciplinary field with people from engineering, philosophy, social studies, anthropological studies and obviously, ecology studies. I became involved in this field after closely following two conflicts, and taking collective action against the installation of large energy generation plants. In the case of the Basque Country, I followed the conflict over the construction of a natural gas-fired plant, and in Chile, I studied large-sized coal thermal plants, and hydroelectric dam plants”, explains Dr. Gloria Baigorrotegui.

Why is gender equality in science, technology and innovation important? “Because it allows us to think through gender, and there are many forms that have been invisible until now. Gender equality is a way to repair what until now has not been addressed in the university. It is a time to awake and establish different bodies and educational shapes that are collective. Gender is how to relate with specific principles and political ethics, with collaboration, humility, resilience and calm”, states Dr. Baigorrotegui.
